Lake Baikal

Baikal is the deepest lake in the world with the maximum depth of 5,371 feet.
Baikal's water surface area comes out to about the area of such a country as Belgium, the Netherlands, or Denmark. The lake is the largest reserve of fresh surface-water on the globe. It would take all the rivers of the world - the Volga and Don, Dnieper and Yenisei, Ural and Ob, Ganges and Orinoko, Amazon and Thames, Seine and Oder - nearly one year to fill Baikal's basin; and all the rivers, streams, and brooklets that now flowing into the Siberian lake-sea would fill it in about four hundred years!
Located in Siberia near the Mongolian border, and surrounded by mountains, forests and wild rivers, Baikal is an immense and breathtaking area of physical beauty.
Baikal holds 20% of the earth's fresh water and harbors more endemic species of plants and animals than any other lake in the world. A glimpse into the lake's clear water is enough to convince anyone that nature not only exists in Siberia, it flourishes.
The lake's surrounding wild mountains and rivers make the Lake Baikal region an ideal area for engaging in an array of outdoor pursuits including hiking, climbing, whitewater sports, skiing and nature photography. There are also many regional cultural attractions. Today, as in the past, Baikal remains a crossroads of cultures where native Sayats still herd reindeer and Buryat people maintain many of their old traditions.

Listvyanka village
Listvyanka is 70 km from Irkutsk. It's situated on the shore of lake Baikal (river Angara mouth). Here is the water ferry through the Angara mouth to Port Baikal from where one can get to the legendary Round Baikal Railroad.Places of interest: Baikal museum of ecology (flora and fauna of the Baikal); Saint Nikolas church, Tchersky's peak (700 miters over the level of the lake, beautiful panorama of the adjacent areas); private picture gallery; astro - physical observatory for solar activity research.
Olkhon Island
One may call Olkhon "the heart of the Baikal". It's possible to see steppe landscapes with going deep into the land and well warmed in summer bays, dunes and heels, mixed forests with relict elms and picturesque marble rocks on the beach. It is a paradise for photographers and wild nature amateurs.
Round Baikal Railroad
Round Baikal Railroad (RBRR) is an old part of Transsiberian railroad that was not flooded after the erection of the Irkutsk Hydro Power Station. The new part of the Transsiberian goes though taiga (woods) and the old line runs right along the Baikal shore from Slyudyanka till Port Baikal. There are more than 30 tunnels and more than 100 bridges on RBRR. Once a day only a train goes to and from and provides for all the stations. There are ideal places for rest and recreation along the road, fresh air and picturesque landscape let you feel the beauty of the nature.
